ART OPENING: INSTALLATION & SOUND COLLABORATION IN NEW DOWNTOWN ART VENUE

Sacramento area installation artist, Cheri Ibes, and Bay Area sound composer, Daniel Konhauser will present a collaborative exhibition entitled Infrastructure. The exhibit is being held at BLOCK, a new downtown art venue located upstairs at 1020 10th Street. The opening reception will be held on Saturday, November 10th from 6pm to 9pm and the exhibit will continue Thursdays and Saturdays from noon to 6pm, through mid December and by appointment.

Infrastructure is an installation comprised of over 100 salvaged white and cream-colored lampshades from a thrift store and burnt out light bulbs from a defunct poultry farm. The stereo surround sound element is a delicately haunting interpretation based on the sounds of shattering light bulbs. The work presents a beautiful, yet disquieting, reflection on the disintegration of a domestic landscape.

Konhauser graduated from the San Francisco Art Institute with a BFA in Film (1984), where he studied film installation with Al Wong. Recently he has been composing sound and creating video projections for the Maxine Moerman Dance Theatre. He continues to sculpt sound and light, conjuring ambiguous, unidentifiable instrumental voices and invoking visual manipulations to address the audience through subconscious associations. He lives and works in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Ibes produces large-scale installations from banal and castoff consumer goods translated into biomorphic appearing ruins. Referencing organic forms, her work suggests a search for the place of human beings and human history within a larger context of nature, time and space. Ibes studied sculpture with the late Robert Arneson, Manuel Neri and, more recently, with Lucy Puls at UC Davis. She lives and works in the Sierra foothills near Coloma.

BLOCK is Ibes’ venue. The opening exhibit features her own and Konhauser’s work, but future shows will present other regionally, nationally, and internationally exhibiting artists. The emphasis will be on installation, innovative and experimental forms of contemporary art. BLOCK is located at the site of the former Michael Himowitz Gallery.
